7. Hong Kong is one of a number of islands situated off the south-eastern coast of China at the mouth of the Canton river. The island is an irregular ridge, stretching nearly east and west; its broken and abrupt peaks rising to the height of nearly 2,000 feet above the sea level. It is separated from the mainland of China by a narrow strait known as the Lyeemun Pass, which does not exceed half a mile in width. The opposite peninsula of Kowloon (2 square miles) was ceded to Great Britain by a treaty entered into by Lord Elgin in 1861 with the Government of China, and now forms part of the Colony. The temperature has a yearly range of from 45° to 99%, but it occasionally falls below 40°. The wet season begins in May, after showers in March and April, and continues until the beginning of August. During this period rain falls almost without intermission. The rainfall varies greatly, but the mean is about 90 inches.

8. The Kowloon British School is maintained by the Government and was founded in 1902. It is confined to children of British parentage, and is a school for girls and young boys. The number of pupils in 1910 was 45. The regular staff will consist of two assistants in addition to the Head Mistress (Mrs. Main) and the new Second Mistress.
